April 2008: Based on inspiration from Invigorate the Common Well, the city of Minneapolis ends the use of water in plastic bottles for all official meetings.

Minneapolis Art in Public Places Program together with the Department of Public Works commission eight artists to design public drinking fountains to be installed at different locations in the city. The vision of this project is to celebrate the role Water has played in Minneapolis history and to foster a commitment to honoring and protecting Water as fundamental to all life. With the crash of the economy later in the end of the year, the city de-commissions five of the fountains, including the one commissioned to Sandy Spieler. Four fountains are carried to fruition: Ancient Traders Market on Franklin Ave( Peter Morales) , by the Midtown YWCA on East Lake Street (Gita Ghei, Sara Hanson and JanLouise Kusske), on old Main Street (Seitu Jones), and Mozaic development in Uptown (Andrew MacGuffie)
